Swift, agile, and remarkably precise, this compact raptor can burst from cover in an instant to seize unsuspecting prey.

Unlike eagles that soar high overhead, Shikras (Tachyspiza badia) are ambush hunters. They often wait patiently on a concealed perch before launching a rapid, low-level chase through trees and buildings.

Their short, rounded wings and long tail allow them to weave effortlessly through dense vegetation in pursuit of birds, lizards, rodents, and large insects.
