RE: Festus Keyamo’s Ridiculous Ultimatum to Peter Obi — A Disservice to Public Office

It is profoundly embarrassing and deeply troubling that Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has chosen to reduce his high office to a tool for petty political witch-hunting against the leader of the opposition and NDC Presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Issuing a theatrical seven-day "ultimatum" demanding a public apology and a ₦25,000 fine over a routine airport parking issue is a textbook definition of abuse of state power. At a time when Nigeria’s aviation sector is plagued by systemic challenges—ranging from decaying airport infrastructure, recurring safety concerns, and astronomical jet fuel prices to the struggles of domestic airlines—the Minister has somehow found the time to review CCTV footage, draft press releases, and coordinate a media trial over a car tire being clamped.
If a fraction of this energy, meticulous oversight, and investigative rigor were applied to fixing the structural rot within our airports, Nigeria's aviation sector would be competing globally. Instead, the Minister has abandoned his core mandate to play the role of an overzealous traffic warden, solely to score cheap political points and intimidate a prominent opposition figure.
This desperate focus on Peter Obi exposes a clear "persecution agenda" driven by jitters over the opposition’s growing strength. Turning a minor, resolved traffic enforcement matter into a matter of national security and state ultimatum is a mockery of public governance. The Minister should stop weaponizing his office for partisan warfare.
We urge the Minister to remember that he is accountable to all Nigerians, not just his political party. It is time to drop the political theater, stop the witch-hunting, and focus on fixing the broken aviation sector he was appointed to manage.
