“My wife told me our daughter's school fees were ₦180,000, so I transferred the money to her that same morning because she said she would pay it on her way to work.

That evening, she sent me a payment receipt, and after seeing the amount and the school's logo, I didn't think twice about it.

Three weeks later, I received a call from the school, because exams are about to start. The bursar apologized before saying, "Sir, we had to send your daughter home today because her school fees haven't been completed."

I laughed and told her there had to be a mistake because my wife had already paid everything. She politely asked me to forward the receipt. I sent it immediately.

Less than five minutes later, my phone rang again.

"Sir, this receipt isn't genuine. The transaction reference doesn't exist in our payment system."

I felt my stomach tighten.

I didn't call my wife. I drove straight home.

She was in the bedroom arranging something inside the wardrobe. When she saw me, she smiled and said, "You're home early."

I held up my phone and asked, "Why did the school say this receipt is fake?"

The smile disappeared from her face.

After a long silence, she quietly said, "I was going to replace the money before you found out."

"Replace what money?" I asked.

She lowered her head, "I used ₦110,000." I stared at her, unable to speak.

Then she walked to the wardrobe, opened it, and stepped aside.

Inside were neatly folded wrappers, all exactly the same.

"What are those?" I finally managed to ask.

She looked at me and said softly, "Our women's August meeting uniform. I couldn't be the only one without it."

At that moment, our daughter walked into the house, I looked at the wrappers.

Then I looked at my daughter.

In that moment, I realized the biggest problem wasn't the missing ₦110,000.

It was discovering what my wife believed was more important than our daughter's education, henceforth I will be paying the school fees myself before she she buy something else.

I told her I will need that money back she is calling me a wicked man, I don't care, anything she wants to call me, I don't care”

— A man has shared how a routine call from his daughter's school uncovered that part of the money he sent her mom for her school fees had been diverted, leaving the child's fees incomplete just weeks before examinations.
