Modest in appearance for much of the year, the Wilson’s Indigobird (Vidua wilsoni) conceals one of nature’s most remarkable breeding strategies. Its understated plumage belies a life shaped by mimicry, deception, and extraordinary adaptation.

An obligate brood parasite, it does not build its own nest; the female lays her eggs in the nests of Firefinches, which unknowingly rear the chicks as their own.
