ECOWAS, through the West African Health Organization (WAHO), has handed over 10 fully equipped ambulances and critical medical equipment worth $3.4 million to The Gambia under an African Development Bank-funded regional health initiative. The donation includes oxygen concentrators, haemodialysis and X-ray machines, anaesthetic equipment and patient monitors to strengthen emergency response and healthcare delivery. ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray described the intervention as a symbol of regional solidarity and resilience, while Gambian Vice President Mohammed Jallow said the ambulances would become “vehicles of hope,” especially for rural communities. The project also trained 852 Gambian health workers and reinforces ECOWAS’ commitment to building stronger health systems across West Africa.
