PUBLIC CONCERN: THE CHANGING FACE OF CULTURAL SPACES IN ENUGU

We visited Toscana last night.

Toscana was once proudly known as a promoter of Igbo rich, cultural dance, and heritage. It was a place where our identity was celebrated.

Today, it appears the focus has shifted. The platform is increasingly being used to promote content centered on "Umu Nwa" trends — where the message seems to be: dance a certain way, and you will attract more customers, followers, and attention.

While we understand the business of entertainment and the realities of social media, we must ask ourselves: Is this still our culture?

It is becoming obvious that some of these trends promote values that do not reflect the dignity, discipline, and industry that Igbo culture is known for. What was once a space for heritage is gradually becoming a strategy to normalize conduct that many in our society find concerning.

This is not to condemn anyone’s livelihood. But as stakeholders and parents, we have a responsibility to protect the values we pass to the next generation.

Therefore, we respectfully call on the Enugu State Government and relevant ministries to:
1. Review the activities of entertainment venues that use our cultural name and spaces.
2. Support initiatives that genuinely promote Igbo language, dance, and heritage.
3. Provide guidance that balances creativity with our communal values.

Enugu is the heart of Igbo culture. We can embrace modern entertainment without losing who we are.

The time to act is now.
