Nigeria is a country with no identifiable owner. Each ethnic group owns a part of her and care nothing of or about the whole. This anomaly stands so steadfastly against Nigeria attaining Nationhood. The xenophobic attacks in South Africa brings this glaring truth to the fore as comments from Nigerians on line reflect. I noticed a disturbing fact. When the name of a person from a particular ethnic group is mentioned as a victim, people from other ethnic groups tend not to show sympathy but instead gloat over the fact that the victim could only be from "them and not us". "They are the criminal elements South Africans are after for their criminal activities." We first want to know which ethnic group the victim(s) belong to before we express our sympathy or anger. So here we are. As a Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa man, it won't bother me if the victims are from other ethnic groups as long as they are not from mine. This sentiment does not portray us as a United nation. We are so divided along ethnic lines that it's hurting Nigeria badly. We must make efforts to attain Nationhood by being first Nigerians before an ethnic group. God bless Nigeria.
