Inspiring Mathematicians 35: Blaise Pascal

Blaise Pascal (1623–1662) was a French mathematician, physicist, inventor, philosopher, and theologian whose work profoundly influenced mathematics and modern science.

A child prodigy, he made groundbreaking contributions to geometry, probability theory (with Pierre de Fermat), and the study of fluids and atmospheric pressure.

His Traité du triangle arithmétique popularized what is now known as Pascal's Triangle, while his work on probability laid the foundation for statistics, economics, and decision theory.

Pascal also invented one of the first mechanical calculators, the Pascaline, to assist with arithmetic.

Beyond mathematics, his philosophical masterpiece Pensées explored faith, reason, and the human condition, making him one of the most influential intellectuals of the 17th century.
