Time for Honest Reflection: Nigerian Football Must Fix Its Foundation 🇳🇬⚽

The Golden Eaglets have now suffered consecutive defeats at the Four-Nation Invitational Tournament in China, raising serious questions ahead of the WAFU B U-17 Championship later this year.

While friendly tournaments are designed to test players, experiment with tactics, and identify the best squad, the performances so far have exposed deeper issues that cannot be ignored. Nigeria has conceded seven goals in two matches, and there is clearly plenty of work to be done before the competitive qualifiers begin.

The coaching crew still has time to evaluate the squad, and difficult decisions will have to be made. Selection should be based on quality, commitment, and performance—not anything else. Every player who wears the green and white jersey must earn that privilege.

Beyond these results lies a bigger concern. Nigeria continues to struggle with grassroots football development. Across the country, countless gifted youngsters lack the structure, facilities, and opportunities needed to reach their full potential. Until youth football receives the investment, planning, and professional management it deserves, our national teams will continue to face the same challenges.

The talent has never been Nigeria’s problem. The real challenge is creating a system that discovers, develops, and nurtures that talent consistently.

The Eaglets still have one more match against hosts China to restore confidence and finish the tournament on a brighter note. Hopefully, the lessons from this competition will help shape a stronger team for the challenges ahead.
