Former House of Representatives member Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje has cautioned against rushing the creation of state police, arguing that Nigeria must first strengthen its national policing system before devolving security powers. Speaking at the ARISE News Town Hall on State Police, she said while devolution is necessary, it should not be viewed as a “magic bullet” for tackling terrorism, banditry and other complex security threats.

Elendu-Ukeje stressed the need for a phased implementation backed by sustainable funding, officer training, stronger arms control and clear coordination among the police, military and other security agencies. She also raised concerns over the reported loss of thousands of police weapons, warning that expanding policing without robust accountability and institutional safeguards could create new security risks rather than resolve existing ones.
