Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has defended the push for state police, arguing that Nigeria’s centralised policing system is outdated and has failed to effectively protect lives and property. Speaking during the ARISE NEWS Town Hall on State Police, Kalu said delays caused by policing decisions being centralised in Abuja have weakened crime response, while decentralising the system would bring law enforcement closer to communities and improve security nationwide.

Kalu noted that extensive public consultations revealed broad support for state police, stressing that officers familiar with local terrain, culture and language would be better equipped to tackle insecurity. He also addressed concerns about potential abuse by governors, assuring Nigerians that the proposed constitutional amendment includes safeguards to prevent political interference and ensure accountability.
