On 07 July 2026, S&P Dow Jones Indices, referred to here as S&P DJI, placed Nigeria on its 2027 Watchlist for a possible reclassification from Standalone Market to Frontier Market, citing regulatory modernisation that has strengthened transparency, enforcement and market integrity.

The placement records progress and leaves the reclassification decision for later. It confirms that Nigeria has met milestones warranting closer evaluation, and it ties any actual move to consistent policy application and operational resilience assessed during the 2027 Country Classification review.

The placement is instructive, as it follows FTSE Russell's decision one week earlier to pause its planned move of Nigeria to Frontier Market status pending a review of the transition to a T+1 settlement cycle. The two providers use different methodologies and have reached different positions in the same market, so a favourable assessment from one can coincide with an open review by the other.

For regulators, operators and issuers, the requirement is continuity. Reclassification will depend on whether settlement reliability, liquidity, foreign investor access and market integrity hold through the review window. This Analyst Note sets out what S&P DJI said, why it matters, the conditions Nigeria must sustain, and the implications for market institutions and investors.
