State Police: Knee-Jerk Reaction to Devolving Responsibilities Must Follow Due Process - Elendu-Ukeje

There is a consensus that we need to devolve security responsibilities to the lowest levels. However, we must also consider the crimes the Nigerian Police have been made to handle in recent times, such as terrorism, banditry, and illegal mining. The police have been de-policed. Most stations have depleted personnel and destroyed facilities. For state policing to succeed, it must be built on a strong, functional federal police structure. A knee-jerk reaction to devolving responsibilities must follow a clear process. As it stands, the state policing agenda seems like an idea that has not been fully thought through.
