State policing has the potential to strengthen security in Nigeria by enabling faster responses to local threats, improving community intelligence, and enhancing accountability through policing that is more attuned to the unique needs of each state. The ongoing process toward establishing state police is a commendable step in deepening Nigeria's security architecture; however, robust constitutional safeguards and independent oversight are essential to ensure that state governors and other State Cabals do not misuse the system for political intimidation, suppression of opposition, or other personal interests, but instead uphold the rule of law and protect all citizens without bias.
