ABSG TO ESTABLISH GENERAL HOSPITAL IN ATANI ABAM AS GOVERNMENT APPROVES PROPOSED SITE

The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare with plans to establish a General Hospital in Atani Abam Community, Arochukwu Local Government Area.

This followed the inspection and approval of the proposed site for the General Hopital project in Abam by the Commissioner for Health and team members in the state.

Speaking during the inspection, at Atani Abam on Wednesday 8th of July 2026, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, said the establishment of the hospital was in line with the directive of the Governor Dr. Alex Otti to ensure equitable distribution of quality healthcare infrastructure across every part of the state.

He described Abam as a large cluster of communities whose growing population deserves a modern health facility capable of providing comprehensive secondary healthcare services.

"We are here on the directive of His Excellency, Governor Alex Otti, to inspect the proposed site for the Abam General Hospital.

"The Governor believes that every Abian, irrespective of location, deserves access to quality healthcare, and that is exactly what this project represents." Prof. Uche stated.

Professor Uche explained that the proposed site met all the technical requirements for the establishment of a standard General Hospital, including accessibility, environmental suitability, climate resilience and adequate land size

He commended the Member representing Arochukwu State Constituency and Majority Leader of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Okoro, for his persistence in ensuring that a suitable location was secured after previously identified sites failed to meet the required standards. He also applauded the people of Atani Abam for voluntarily donating more than the required land for the project.

"The Abam people deserve a modern General Hospital. After carefully assessing this location, we are satisfied that it meets the standards required for the construction of a world class healthcare facility.

"We appreciate the sacrifices and unity demonstrated by the community in making this land available." Prof Uche said.

The Commissioner recalled that previous administrations had conceived similar plans for an Abam General Hospital without bringing them to fruition, expressing confidence that the present administration would finally deliver the long-awaited project.

He disclosed that the architectural designs had been completed, the procurement process was underway and construction would commence after the necessary approvals.

"This project will not end as another proposal on paper. The designs are ready, procurement is ongoing, and we will soon move to the construction phase. Under Governor Alex Otti's leadership, we are determined to build a hospital that will serve not only Abam but neighbouring communities for generations to come."

Professor Uche further noted that the state's sustained investments in healthcare were already yielding measurable results, revealing that Abia has made remarkable progress in maternal and child healthcare outcomes through strategic investments in infrastructure, equipment, manpower and health sector reforms.

Also speaking, the Majority Leader of the Abia State House of Assembly and Member representing Arochukwu State Constituency, Hon. Uchenna Okoro, described the event as a historic milestone for the people of Abam. He said the formal presentation of the land by Atani Abam Community demonstrated the people's readiness to partner with government in bringing quality healthcare closer to rural communities and expressed his appreciation to the Governor Dr. Alex Otti for choosing Atani Abam for the project.

"Today is a formal declaration by my community that we wholeheartedly welcome this project. We are prepared to provide every necessary support, including donating more than the required land, because this hospital will bring development, employment opportunities and quality healthcare to our people," Hon. Okoro said.

Speaking on behalf of Atani Abam Community, the Chairman of the Community Union, Elder Kalu Ena Kalu, expressed profound appreciation to Governor Alex Otti for fulfilling the aspirations of the people. He said the community unanimously agreed to donate the land for the proposed hospital and pledged its unwavering support for the project.

"We are overwhelmed with joy. Governor Alex Otti is a leader who fulfils his promises and even exceeds expectations. Since he has decided to build this hospital, we have no doubt it will become a reality. On behalf of our community, we fully support this initiative and will continue to stand firmly behind the government in ensuring its success," Elder Kalu stated.

He further assured the state government of the community's continued cooperation throughout the execution of the project, describing the proposed General Hospital as a life
