A diplomatic and sporting storm has erupted after Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla faced backlash over alleged racist remarks targeting France captain Kylian Mbappé following France’s 2026 FIFA World Cup victory over Paraguay.
Mbappé condemned the comments as “brazen racism,” while the French Football Federation called the remarks unacceptable and announced plans to pursue legal action. Paraguay’s government has also distanced itself from the senator’s statements, reaffirming its commitment to respect and dignity.
The senator, however, has defended her position and continues to stand by her comments.
The controversy has reignited global conversations about racism in football and the responsibility of public figures to promote respect and inclusion.
