One of the greatest prayers you can make is this: when you’re not in the room to speak or defend yourself, may the person present who is perceived to be your friend truly be your friend—not a frenemy.
A person’s character is often judged in rooms they never enter. It can be built or destroyed in conversations they never hear.
The people around you should make others afraid to assassinate your character because they know falsehood, gossip, and misrepresentation will be challenged immediately. That is the mark of genuine friendship and loyalty.
Choose your circle wisely. Not everyone who smiles with you will stand for you when your name comes up in your absence.
