Inspiring Mathematicians 33: René Descartes

René Descartes (1596–1650) was a French mathematician, philosopher, and scientist whose work transformed both mathematics and modern philosophy.

Often called the father of analytic geometry, he introduced the Cartesian coordinate system, which united algebra and geometry and laid the foundation for modern graphing, calculus, and much of mathematical physics.

His influential work La Géométrie (1637) demonstrated how geometric problems could be solved using algebraic equations, fundamentally changing mathematical practice.

Beyond mathematics, Descartes is renowned for his philosophical statement, Cogito, ergo sum (“I think, therefore I am”), and his emphasis on reason and systematic doubt profoundly shaped the development of modern Western philosophy and scientific inquiry.
