In my own opinion, the inherent dread of the unknown and the finality of death drives we humans to create systems of belief that offer hope and an eternal reward. Let me explain it well for you to understand. From nothing we come and nothing we shall return, and that is why we humans invented this thing called religion, because we needed something to console ourselves, because we're scared of harsh reality. Now tell me this: if a supreme, all-powerful being actively governs the universe and desires a relationship with humans, it is reasonable to expect clear, undeniable, and universal communication.
Let me make it more clear with a gorilla analogy: if you look into a standard room and see no gorilla, the absence of evidence is excellent proof that no gorilla is there.
