Can African-built social platforms solve monetization and connectivity challenges that global platforms overlook?
Two emerging platforms, LekeeLekee and Textmob, are taking different approaches to building social media for Africa.
LekeeLekee, backed by the THISDAY/ARISE Media Group, combines social networking, messaging, and video features into one app. It emphasizes end-to-end encryption, localized content moderation, and a lightweight PWA to perform well on slow or expensive internet connections.
Textmob focuses on rewarding user engagement. Through MobCoins, users can earn cash or airtime from activities like posting, polls, and live streaming. It also includes messaging, short videos (Snaps), and an AI assistant.
The main debate is whether media-backed distribution (LekeeLekee) or incentive-driven engagement (Textmob) is the stronger long-term strategy. Other questions include whether African apps should prioritize lightweight text-based experiences over multimedia on limited networks, and how localized moderation and translation features affect community growth and scalability across the continent.
