Oluremi Tinubu harvests vegetables from Presidential Villa Garden

Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has harvested fresh vegetables from the Presidential Villa garden in Abuja, renewing her appeal to Nigerians to embrace home gardening as a practical way to strengthen food security and reduce household feeding costs.

The First Lady visited the garden on Monday for another harvest from the vegetable plot established about two years ago under the Every Home A Garden initiative.

The garden continues to thrive, producing a variety of vegetables, including spinach, waterleaf and fluted pumpkin. Following the harvest, Mrs. Tinubu shared part of the produce with members of her staff, encouraging Nigerians to cultivate the habit of giving and supporting one another.

The Villa garden was inaugurated in July 2024 under the Renewed Hope Initiative as part of efforts to promote household farming and improve food security amid rising food prices across the country.

Alongside the project, the First Lady launched the Every Home A Garden competition, aimed at encouraging women and families nationwide to cultivate vegetables within their homes, regardless of the size of their available space.

Speaking at the launch, Mrs. Tinubu explained that the initiative was designed to demonstrate that even small gardens could provide nutritious food for families while helping to reduce the cost of living.

The Presidential Villa garden features a range of crops, including spinach, waterleaf, bitter leaf, scent leaf, ewedu, okra and lemongrass, and remains a key part of the First Lady's advocacy for healthy living, sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.
