Minister of Works David Umahi has dismissed claims that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is responsible for flooding in parts of Lagos, insisting the project was specifically engineered to mitigate flood risks. Speaking to ARISE NEWS, he said the highway features elevated road levels, multiple culverts and evacuation channels designed to prevent ocean surges from reaching residential areas while improving stormwater drainage into the lagoon.

Umahi argued that flooding in Victoria Island predates the project and blamed persistent flooding in some communities on blocked drainage systems, indiscriminate waste disposal and construction on natural waterways. He also described the highway as a major economic catalyst, saying Tinubu’s legacy infrastructure projects are creating jobs, attracting investment and transforming connectivity across the country.

Godwin Kayit: Flooding in Lagos didn't start with the Coastal Highway, so it's fair to say the problem is much bigger than one project. If the highway was truly designed with proper drainage, culverts, and flood-control measures, that's a positive step. At the same time, the real test is how it performs over time...
