Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has defended the proposed State Police Bill, saying it is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture while preventing political interference through strict constitutional safeguards. He said the bill creates independent State Police Service Commissions, guarantees their financial autonomy, limits governors’ powers, and subjects key appointments and removals to oversight by the National Police Council and state legislatures. The proposal also clearly defines the roles of federal and state police, with federal intervention allowed only under specific constitutional conditions.
