Veteran Nollywood actor Emeka Ike has sparked controversy with his blunt advice to women who enter relationships primarily for financial gain.

In a recent interview with BBC Pidgin, the outspoken actor described dating for money as a “romantic scam” and equated it to fraud.

“Love and marriage are not a scam,” Ike said. “But there are a few hungry people who are using relationships as meal tickets. That’s where it becomes a scam.”

He drew a sharp distinction between genuine love and transactional relationships, warning that entering a relationship with hidden financial motives while pretending to be in love amounts to deception.

“A lot of girls are going into relationships because of what they want to get from the man,” he continued. “They should just join street-begging instead of using a relationship to raise money.”

Emeka Ike’s strong remarks reflect growing frustration in some quarters over the commercialisation of dating and marriage in Nigeria, a phenomenon often criticised on social media as “419 love” or “romance for gain.”
