This is the cancer that scares me most as a doctor.
Not because it’s the most common.
But because it often stays silent until it’s already advanced.
7. New-onset diabetes after age 50 with no obvious reason
👉 In some people, pancreatic cancer is first noticed because it suddenly affects blood sugar control. New diabetes isn’t usually caused by cancer, but when it appears unexpectedly—especially alongside weight loss—it deserves investigation.
6. Unexplained weight loss
👉 Losing weight without trying is never something to ignore. Pancreatic cancer can affect digestion, appetite, and the way your body uses nutrients.
5. Pale, greasy, foul-smelling or floating stools
👉 The pancreas produces enzymes that help digest fat. When it isn’t working properly, fat passes through undigested, causing stools that are pale, oily, difficult to flush, or float.
4. Persistent upper abdominal pain that spreads to the back
👉 Because the pancreas lies deep behind the stomach, pain often starts in the upper abdomen and radiates into the middle of the back. It usually doesn’t improve with simple treatments.
3. Yellow skin or yellow eyes (jaundice)
👉 A tumour can block the bile duct, causing bilirubin to build up in the body. This often happens early in cancers affecting the head of the pancreas, but may occur later in cancers elsewhere in the pancreas.
2. Loss of appetite or feeling full very quickly
👉 If you’re suddenly eating much less, feeling full after only a few bites, or experiencing ongoing nausea without another explanation, it’s worth getting checked.
1. Unexplained itching
👉 Sometimes intense, widespread itching develops before jaundice becomes obvious because bile salts accumulate under the skin.
These symptoms are often subtle.
Most people who experience them will not have pancreatic cancer.
But if they’re persistent, unexplained, or several occur together, don’t ignore them—see a healthcare professional.
Pancreatic cancer is difficult to detect early, which is why recognising potential warning signs and acting promptly is so important.
❤️ Share this with someone you care about. It could help them recognise a symptom they might otherwise dismiss.
