Palm Oil Causes Heart Disease"
Many people blame palm oil for heart
disease but is the science really that simple?
I once had a conversation with someone who confidently told me,
"Palm oil is the reason people develop heart disease."
I asked a simple question:
"Have you looked at the scientific evidence,
or are you repeating what you've heard?"
That question changed the direction of our discussion.
The reality is that heart health is influenced by many factors,
not just one cooking oil.
Scientific research shows that overall dietary patterns,
excessive calorie intake, trans fats, physical inactivity,
smoking, genetics, and other lifestyle
factors play major roles in cardiovascular health.
Natural unrefined red palm oil also contains beta-carotene,
tocotrienols (a form of Vitamin E), and other antioxidants.
Like any edible fat or oil, it should be
consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
The conversation should be guided by
evidence not fear or oversimplified claims.
A 2015 systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal
of Nutrition found no clear evidence
that palm oil consumption increased
the risk of cardiovascular disease compared with other vegetable oils.
Similarly, the World Health Organization emphasizes that reducing
cardiovascular disease depends on improving overall diet quality,
limiting industrially produced trans fats,
reducing excessive salt and sugar intake, avoiding tobacco,
staying physically active, and maintaining a healthy weight
not simply eliminating one specific oil.
The lesson is simple:
Nutrition is more complex than blaming a single food.
Evidence should guide our opinions not headlines or social media narratives.
