Inspiring Mathematicians 30: Madhava of Sangamagrama

Madhava of Sangamagrama (c. 1340–c. 1425) was an Indian mathematician and astronomer from Kerala who founded the influential Kerala School of Mathematics.

He is celebrated for pioneering the use of infinite series centuries before similar ideas emerged in Europe, deriving remarkably accurate series expansions for trigonometric functions such as sine, cosine, and arctangent, as well as highly precise approximations of π.

His groundbreaking work anticipated key concepts of calculus, including power series and limits, making him one of the most important mathematical innovators of the medieval world.

Although many of his original writings have been lost, his discoveries were preserved and expanded by later scholars of the Kerala School, securing his place as one of history's greatest mathematicians.
