Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has cautioned that many of the grievances that triggered Nigeria’s 1967–1970 civil war remain unresolved, warning the nation must never experience another conflict. Speaking at the presentation of Asaba Massacre, a historical account documenting the killing of civilians during the war, Obasanjo admitted he could not speak authoritatively on the Asaba incident as Gen. Murtala Muhammed commanded operations there. He stressed the need to confront history, condemn past atrocities, address lingering ethnic distrust, and ensure such tragedies never recur. Author Chief Chuck Nduka-Eze said extensive evidence points to the killing of over 1,000 unarmed Asaba men after they declared loyalty to Nigeria.
