A message from a Nigerian to the South African xenophobes:

You Have Awakened the Lion: A Final Word to South Africa's Xenophobes

Listen carefully, because I will say this only once more.

We are 250 million strong. We speak over 200 languages. We have fought in wars from World War One to World War Two, survived a civil war that took millions of lives, and forced peace in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and other trouble spots across this continent. When the Afrikaner regime and its European backers held you in chains, Nigeria stood up for you. We financed your struggle. Some of us bled for you, went to jail for you, were beaten by police for you. We gave your exiles passports, cash, and homes.

I am not a trader. I am not a drug dealer. I am an educated, exposed Nigerian — like millions of Nigerians of every class and background who have never set foot in South Africa and never needed to. You know one type of Nigerian. You do not know the backbone of Nigeria, the power force within it. We were in Paris, Milan, London, and New York while you were telling yourselves stories about who we are.

To those now wielding whips, knives, and bullets against my people: you have not shown strength. You have shown the world exactly who you have chosen to become. Foreign workers helped build your economy. You do not have more undocumented migrants than any other African country — you have simply chosen scapegoats over solutions.

And understand this: in so doing, you have awakened something. Not a threat of violence — Nigeria does not need to threaten. A reckoning of memory. One day you will sober up and ask: where are the Nigerians? Where are the Malawians, the Zimbabweans, the Congolese, the Ethiopians? And the real oppressors — the ones who never left — will laugh at your isolation and quietly refit the shackles that Nigerian sacrifice helped strike from your legs.

You are lucky that Nigeria's present leadership is weak, compromised, and incompetent — too busy protecting itself to protect its citizens abroad. But leadership changes. Memory does not. Nigeria will not forget what was done and said in these years.

Stop killing Nigerians. Stop killing Africans. Stop insulting the very people who paid for your freedom. You have crossed a line, and history — not violence, history — will hold you to account for it.
