A Year of Applications. Zero Shortlists. And the CV Was Never the Problem.

I need to start with something I hear almost every week now: a doctor or AHP who has submitted forty, sixty, sometimes over a hundred NHS applications across a full year — and has not been shortlisted once.

Here is the pattern I see, every single time I go through their TRAC history with them.

It is almost never clinical competence. It is almost always one of three structural failures, repeated across every application without the candidate realising it is the same mistake wearing a different job title.

First: the supporting statement is one generic document, copied and lightly edited, sent to forty different Trusts. TRAC shortlisting is scored against a specific person specification, criterion by criterion, in the order the panel reads it. A generic statement cannot answer a specific scoring matrix, no matter how strong the underlying experience is.

Second: the entry band is wrong. Candidates frequently apply either below the level their experience actually supports — which reads as a lack of insight into their own seniority — or above it, without the evidence to back the claim. Both get filtered out at the same stage, for opposite reasons.

Third, and the one almost nobody checks: the same three or four structural form fields are left thin on every single application — the immigration disclosure field, the personal statement field where one exists separately from the supporting statement, and the career gap explanation. These are scored. A blank or one-line answer in any of them can silently disqualify an otherwise strong application before a human ever reads the attached CV properly.

A year of silence is not a verdict on your clinical ability. It is very often the same fixable pattern, repeated at scale.
