Inspiring Mathematicians 29: Qin Jiushao

Qin Jiushao (c. 1202–1261) was one of the greatest mathematicians of medieval China and the author of the influential work Mathematical Treatise in Nine Sections (Shùshū Jiǔzhāng, 1247).

He made groundbreaking contributions to algebra, number theory, numerical analysis, and computational mathematics, including a sophisticated method for solving high-degree polynomial equations now known as the Qin Jiushao algorithm (similar to Horner's method), and one of the earliest systematic descriptions of the Chinese remainder theorem for solving systems of congruences.

His work also applied mathematics to practical problems in astronomy, engineering, taxation, surveying, and land measurement, making him one of the most innovative and influential mathematicians in Chinese history.
