Circle shares dropped 17% after a new stablecoin rival entered the market.
Open Standard unveiled Open USD, a digital dollar backed by major names including Stripe, Coinbase, Mastercard, Visa and BlackRock.
The key difference is the model: Open USD aims to remove minting and redemption fees, while sharing reserve income with participating businesses instead of keeping most of the Treasury yield at the issuer level.
That directly challenges one of Circle’s core revenue streams behind USDC.
