Nigerians have a constitutional and legal interest in ensuring that those seeking public office meet all the qualifications required by law. Under the Electoral Act, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) publishes the personal particulars, including Form EC9 (formerly CF001) and supporting credentials, of nominated candidates for public inspection. This process is intended to promote transparency and allow citizens to scrutinize the information submitted by candidates.

The publication of these documents gives members of the public an opportunity to verify the accuracy of a candidate’s qualifications. Where there are reasonable grounds to believe that false information or forged credentials have been submitted, the law provides a mechanism for interested persons to challenge the candidate before the appropriate court within the time allowed by law.

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the electoral process should not be left solely to INEC or the government. Every Nigerian has a role to play in promoting transparency, accountability, and credible elections. Greater public participation in scrutinizing candidates’ qualifications and the electoral process will strengthen our democracy and help restore public confidence.

If citizens choose to peacefully and lawfully petition or protest to demand greater transparency and accountability from INEC, they should do so in accordance with the Constitution and the laws of Nigeria. Peaceful civic engagement is a legitimate part of a democratic society.

Nigerians are tired of poor leadership. This is 2026, and Nigeria must continue to strengthen its democratic institutions and move forward alongside other developing nations. Free, fair, transparent, and credible elections are essential to building the future that Nigerians deserve.
