Errol Musk, the father of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has come under heavy criticism after making controversial remarks about apartheid-era South Africa during a CNN interview.

Speaking on CNN’s MisinfoNation: White Genocide with journalist Donie O’Sullivan, Errol Musk rejected claims that Black South Africans were oppressed under apartheid. Instead, he argued that white South Africans “gave them work” and “fed them,” saying this allowed the Black population to grow significantly over time.

“How do you oppress? We gave them work. We fed them… Enough with this nonsense,” Musk said during the interview. He also claimed he “never saw” the oppression that historians and survivors have documented.

His remarks quickly sparked backlash across South Africa and online, with critics accusing him of attempting to rewrite history. Political commentators, activists and social media users pointed out that apartheid was a legally enforced system of racial segregation that denied Black South Africans basic human rights, including the right to vote, freedom of movement, land ownership in most areas, quality education and equal economic opportunities.

Apartheid, which lasted from 1948 until the early 1990s, has been widely recognised by historians and international bodies as a system of institutionalised racial oppression. Millions of Black South Africans were forcibly removed from their homes, subjected to discriminatory laws and denied political representation before the system officially ended in 1994 with the country’s first democratic elections.

During the interview, Errol Musk also expressed concern about demographic changes in the United States, claiming the country would be “doomed” if white people became a minority. Those comments further fueled criticism, with many accusing him of promoting racially divisive narratives.

The interview has reignited debate over historical revisionism, race relations and the lasting legacy of apartheid in South Africa, with many insisting that the suffering experienced under the apartheid regime should not be downplayed or denied.
