Illegal migration is unlawful, and that makes an illegal or undocumented migrant a concern for any functioning country. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) outlines several lawful approaches to managing irregular migration. In addition, every country has immigration authorities saddled with the responsibility of regulating the entry and exit of people, registering and documenting migrants, and identifying those who are in the country illegally.

None of these measures, however, supports xenophobic attacks against illegal migrants. Lawful options such as deportation and repatriation have been adopted by many countries to address irregular migration, and these are generally accepted because they are legal and civil. How, then, does a country choose xenophobia as a means of dealing with illegal migrants?

I am not angry with them. Rather, I have come to terms with the Igbo proverb: "Ọ bụrụ na ị kpọọ ihe gị ihe efu, ụmụaka ga-eji ya egwuri egwu."

I look forward to our country reclaiming its place as the Giant of Africa soonest.
