I can’t imagine the terror and trauma Nigerians in South Africa are going through right now. Living in fear, wondering if you’ll make it home safely simply because of your nationality is heartbreaking.
I keep asking myself: why so much hate? #whatstrendingwithojyokpe
Many Nigerians remember the support that was given to the anti-apartheid struggle, the sacrifices made across Africa, and the belief that we were standing together for freedom and justice. It is painful to see fellow Africans targeted in this way.
No grievance should ever justify violence, mob attacks, or the loss of innocent lives. Every African deserves to live, work, and pursue opportunities anywhere on the continent without fear.
The African Union was established to promote unity, peace, and the protection of Africans. If it cannot respond effectively when Africans are attacked by fellow Africans, many will understandably question whether it is fulfilling its purpose.
My thoughts and prayers are with every innocent person affected. May peace prevail, justice be done, and may the leaders of our continent act decisively to protect lives before more families are left grieving.
Africa must do better.
