Inspiring Mathematicians 28: Yang Hui

Yang Hui (c. 1238–1298) was one of the most influential mathematicians of China's Song dynasty, renowned for advancing arithmetic, algebra, and combinatorics.

He is best known for popularizing the triangular arrangement of binomial coefficients now widely called Pascal's Triangle, which had been described in China centuries before Pascal and is often referred to as the Yang Hui Triangle in East Asia.

Through works such as Yang Hui's Mathematical Methods, he explained practical techniques for solving equations, extracting roots, and performing complex calculations, making mathematics more accessible to scholars and administrators.

His contributions helped preserve and expand China's rich mathematical tradition, and his work continues to be recognized as a landmark in the history of combinatorics and numerical methods.
