Emeritus Professor of Economics and Public Policy, Prof. Hogan Akan Ekpo, has called for a fundamental shift in Nigeria’s economic strategy, arguing that the country must sustain double-digit economic growth for at least 20 years to meaningfully reduce multidimensional poverty and achieve inclusive development. He said economic growth alone does not guarantee development, urging policymakers to adopt a developmental-state model inspired by countries such as China, Singapore and Malaysia while crafting homegrown solutions. Ekpo also expressed concerns over declining industrial output, persistent oil dependence, falling per capita income, and questioned official inflation, unemployment and exchange rate figures, warning that current economic indicators may not reflect the realities facing Nigerians.
