My views on these NYSC changes...

NYSC's original purpose after the Nigerian Civil War was to promote national integration. If specialization becomes the dominant focus, this integration objective could receive less emphasis. Some streams may become highly attractive. If graduates choose their preferred stream, many may select technology or entrepreneurship while fewer opt for sectors where the country faces shortages, such as agriculture or teaching.

The first three to four months should remain focused on national service. Corps members should still be posted outside their state of origin. Instead of selecting a stream immediately, corps members could spend the initial months in general service before transitioning into one of the 11 specialized streams for the remainder of the year. Government should avoid designing the training alone. Each stream should be co-developed with industry leaders. Every stream should end with at least one recognized professional certification. Schools, hospitals, and rural communities should not lose the benefits they currently receive. A balanced allocation system could reserve a proportion of corps members for essential public services while allowing others to participate in specialized tracks. Participants should indicate preferred streams, but placement should consider: Academic background. Aptitude assessments.
National workforce priorities. Available training capacity.
This reduces oversubscription to a few popular sectors. Success should no longer be measured simply by the number of graduates who completed service. Instead, annual performance indicators could include: Graduate employment rates. Number of businesses started. Professional certifications earned. Community projects completed. Public-sector impact. Employer satisfaction.
National integration indicators, such as cross-cultural participation and community engagement.
