The NYSC in its present form is outdated and has outlived its usefulness. So kudos to the government for the proposed reform.

However, in light of our present insecurity situation, the greatest reform I want to see in the NYSC is to introduce compulsory military training for all participating members.

The scheme's four segments - Orientation, PPA, CD and POP - should be rigged with inbuilt military training. On passing out, the best graduating participants in military training should choose which arm of the Military or paramilitary they should serve. Those who do not wish to join any of the services should be excused.

It is my belief that compulsory military training for NYSC members will greatly curb insecurity. Of course, this means greater funding and accountability for the scheme, but if we are serious we can do it successfully.

Compulsory military training for the participants will serve the country's short and long term needs - like it does for Israel.

The NYSC in its present form is outdated and has outlived its usefulness. So kudos to the government...
