*1. What is Schizophrenia?*
Schizophrenia is a long-term mental health condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. People with schizophrenia may seem like they’ve “lost touch with reality”. It’s not split personality - that’s a different condition.
*2. Causes / Risk Factors*
No single cause. It’s usually a mix of:
1. *Genetics*: Runs in families, but having a relative with it doesn’t mean you’ll get it
2. *Brain chemistry + structure*: Imbalance of dopamine + glutamate; differences in brain areas that control thinking/feeling
3. *Environment*: Prenatal stress, birth complications, childhood trauma, cannabis use in teens
4. *Age*: Most common onset is 18-25 for men, 25-35 for women
*3. Key Symptoms & Indications*
Symptoms fall into 3 groups:
1. *Positive symptoms* = things “added” to normal behavior:
- *Psychosis*: Hallucinations - hearing voices, seeing things others don’t
- *Delusions*: Fixed false beliefs, e.g. “people are plotting against me”
- *Disorganized thinking/speech*: Jumping topics, made-up words, hard to follow. This is the *pressure speech* you mentioned
2. *Negative symptoms* = things “lost”:
- Lack of motivation, flat emotions, withdrawal, inability to think/plan on their own, poor hygiene
3. *Cognitive symptoms*:
- Trouble focusing, memory problems, poor decision-making
*4. Things that happen in schizophrenia*
1. *Pressure speech*: Talking fast, nonstop, jumping topics. Person feels thoughts are racing.
2. *Inability to think independently*: Difficulty organizing thoughts, making decisions, or following a plan due to disorganized thinking.
3. *Psychosis episodes*: Periods where reality testing breaks down - hallucinations + delusions are strongest then.
4. *Social withdrawal*: Pulling away from family/friends.
5. *Poor insight*: Many don’t realize they’re ill, called “anosognosia”.
*5. Management/Treatment*
Schizophrenia has no cure yet, but it’s very treatable. Goal = reduce symptoms + improve quality of life:
1. *Antipsychotic medication*: First line. Helps control hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking. Must be taken long-term + supervised by psychiatrist.
2. *Psychotherapy*: CBT helps manage delusions, cope with symptoms. Family therapy educates relatives.
3. *Rehabilitation*: Job training, social skills training, supported housing.
4. *Lifestyle*: Avoid alcohol/drugs, regular sleep, stress management, strong support system.
5. *Hospitalization*: Only during acute psychosis if person is danger to self/others.
*Important note*: This is general educational info. Schizophrenia must be diagnosed + managed by a psychiatrist/mental health professional. Early treatment gives the best outcome. If you or someone you know shows these signs, seek help immediately from a hospital, psychiatric clinic, or call emergency services 112 in Nigeria.
