Inspiring Mathematicians 27: Nasir al-Din al-Tusi

Nasir al-Din al-Tusi (1201–1274) was a Persian polymath whose groundbreaking work transformed mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy during the Islamic Golden Age.

He established trigonometry as an independent branch of mathematics, developing systematic treatments of plane and spherical trigonometry and introducing important formulas that remain fundamental today.

At the renowned Maragha Observatory, which he founded, al-Tusi produced highly accurate astronomical tables and devised the famous Tusi couple, a geometric model that generated linear motion from circular motions and later influenced developments in astronomy, including aspects of Nicolaus Copernicus's work.

His writings preserved, expanded, and synthesized Greek, Persian, and Islamic mathematical traditions, making him one of the most influential mathematicians and scientific thinkers of the medieval world.
