Character Is National Infrastructure

We often say Nigeria has a leadership problem.

And that’s true.

But can we also ask a harder question?

Do we have a people problem?

When a newly installed manhole cover disappears overnight…

When railway tracks are stolen for scrap…

When electricity cables are vandalized, leaving entire communities in darkness…

When oil pipelines are sabotaged, costing the nation billions in lost revenue and environmental damage…

When public schools are stripped of doors, windows, or furniture…

Who does these things?

Not ghosts.

People.

Fellow citizens.

The truth is, no government can build fast enough if citizens are constantly destroying what belongs to everyone. Infrastructure vandalism—from manhole covers to power cables and pipelines—continues to cost Nigeria billions of naira every year and disrupts lives, businesses, and public services. Leadership matters.

But character matters too.

Integrity isn’t only for those in government.

It is for all of us.

It is choosing not to take what isn’t ours.

It is protecting public property as carefully as we protect our own.

It is teaching our children that “government property” is our property, not “free property.”

Every act of honesty builds a nation.

Every act of selfishness weakens it.

Perhaps the Nigeria we desire won’t be built by better leaders alone.

It will also be built by better citizens.

Because character is national infrastructure.
