NNEKA'S DIARY XXXIII
After the wedding, we drove to our new home—the one we had picked together. A modest apartment with three bedrooms, a small kitchen, and a terrace where Kunle promised to plant flowers.
It wasn't big, but it was ours.
I walked in, kicked off my heels, and collapsed onto the couch.
"I can't feel my feet," I groaned.
Kunle sat beside me and lifted my legs onto his lap. "Let me help."
He started massaging my feet, and I almost cried from relief.
"Mr. Kunle," I said, "you're going to spoil me."
"Good. That's the plan."
He leaned over and kissed my forehead.
"Welcome home, my lady."
"Welcome home, my king."
Later That Night
We sat on the bed—still tired, still processing everything.
"I can't believe today happened," I said.
"I can," he replied. "I knew it would. The day I saw you at that restaurant, the morning after the burial, when you looked at me and didn't run—I knew."
"I almost ran."
"But you didn't."
"No," I admitted. "I didn't."
He took my hand. "Thank you, Nneka. For staying. For asking the hard questions. For loving Mary like she's yours. For loving me like I'm worth loving."
"You are worth loving, Nkem."
"Sometimes I forget."
"Then I'll remind you. Every single day."
He kissed me—slower than at the altar, deeper. When we pulled apart, his eyes were wet.
"What is it?" I asked.
"Just... thank you."
I rested my head on his chest.
We stayed like that—not talking, not sleeping. Just being.
And I realized something.
All those years of waiting. All that pain. All those nights I wondered if love would ever find me.
It wasn't waiting for a man.
It was waiting for this man.
The one who made every heartbreak worth it.
The one who made me believe in second chances.
The one who showed me that love, real love—doesn't erase the past.
It redeems it.
To be continued …
