HOW CAN I WORK TO END INJUSTICE.

TEXT.
Amos 2:6-8
[6]This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Israel,
    even for four, I will not relent.
They sell the innocent for silver,
    and the needy for a pair of sandals.
[7]They trample on the heads of the poor
    as on the dust of the ground
    and deny justice to the oppressed.
Father and son use the same girl
    and so profane my holy name.
[8]They lie down beside every altar
    on garments taken in pledge.
In the house of their god
    they drink wine taken as fines.

MESSAGE.
Injustice abounded in Israel and the prophet Amos is letting the people know that God is not happy. Injustice abounds in our world today and I'm sure that God is not happy with us either. Although we cannot solve all the problems that injustice creates, we do have choices to make in our own circle of influence. When I was a child, my family had friends of different religions and cultures. I don't remember my father speaking disrespectfully of anyone. This is most likely why I don't have an "us and them" attitude. My children also have friends of different races, religions and cultures. One day as I arrived home, two little girls walked by and asked me if I had a cat. Since my cat was sitting on the windowsill, it was pretty clear that I had a cat! I said, "Yes," and they told me I had to be careful because a certain ethnic group killed cats and ate them. These children were also aware that my next door neighbors were from this particular country. I told them that they were mistaken and that my neighbors were very nice people. These children were only seven or eight. Where did they learn such prejudice? Most likely they heard it at home from their parents. We can be part of the solution by not encouraging prejudice at home or among our friends. We can work with groups that help the poor and the vulnerable. We can help to see that our laws protect all people by learning about those who run for public office and support those whose views support Christian values. We can be part of the problem, or part of the solution. The choice is ours.

PRAYER.
Almighty God and Father, you
love all your children and when
you see injustice, you are not
happy. Help us to be your eyes
and ears so that we may be part of
the solution and not part of the
problem. Amen.
