CBN Data: Nigeria's Private Sector Credit Barely Grew in May as Government Borrowing Surged

New CBN data for May 2026 reveals a widening gap between government and private sector credit in Nigeria. While credit to the government expanded 2.0% MoM to N40.4trn, private sector credit grew just 0.6% to N81.0trn, weighed down by a 26.5% MPR and average lending rates near 34.8%.
