Inspiring Mathematicians 26: Fibonacci

Fibonacci (c. 1170–c. 1250), born Leonardo of Pisa, was one of the most influential mathematicians of the Middle Ages.

Through his landmark book Liber Abaci (1202), he introduced and popularized the Hindu–Arabic numeral system (0–9) in Europe, demonstrating its superiority over Roman numerals for arithmetic and commerce.

He is best known for the Fibonacci sequence—1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, …—in which each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers, a pattern that appears in many natural phenomena and has applications in mathematics, computer science, finance, art, and biology.

His work helped transform European mathematics and laid important foundations for the development of modern arithmetic, algebra, and number theory.
