GMC Registration via PLAB.

You have an MBBS from outside the UK.

You want to work as a doctor in the NHS.

Here is exactly what stands between you and your GMC number — in the correct order.

Step one: English language evidence. Before you can apply to sit PLAB, you need a current English language certificate. The GMC accepts OET with a minimum Grade B in all four components. Results must be from a test taken within two years of the date of your GMC application.

Step two: PLAB 1. This is a written examination of 180 single best answer questions over three hours. It covers applied clinical knowledge across all major specialties. You can sit PLAB 1 at approved test centres outside the UK, including centres in India, Nigeria, and Pakistan. It runs multiple times per year.

Step three: PLAB 2. This is an objective structured clinical examination held at the GMC's assessment centre in Manchester. There are 18 stations and you are assessed on history taking, communication, clinical examination, and procedural skills. You must pass PLAB 1 before booking PLAB 2. You will need to travel to the UK for this.

Step four: GMC registration. After passing both parts, you apply for provisional registration with the GMC. This enables you to work in foundation year level approved posts in the UK.

Step five: full registration. After completing an acceptable period of work at foundation level and demonstrating the required competencies, you apply for full registration with a licence to practise. That licence opens NHS career progression.

One important note for 2026: the Medical Training Prioritisation Act restricts specialty training posts for international graduates. Non-training posts remain fully open. I am covering this in detail on Wednesday.

If you want a complete guide for your specific situation, DM me GMC.

Post 5 is at 5pm. OET versus IELTS — which test to take and why the choice matters more than most candidates realise.
