In-Country Visa Switch.

You are already in the UK.

You have found a healthcare job that will sponsor you.

You Google how to switch your visa and get five different answers.

Here is what is actually true.

Most people already in the UK on a Graduate visa, a Skilled Worker visa from a different employer, a Dependent visa, or a Student visa can switch to the Health and Care Worker visa without leaving the country. The process is called a change of conditions application. You submit it to the Home Office while you are here.

What you cannot do is switch from a Standard Visitor visa. If you entered as a visitor, you must leave the UK first and apply from outside. Applications submitted from inside the UK on a visitor visa are refused. This is not a grey area.

Your current visa must still be valid when you submit the switch application. Not just active. Valid. If your leave expires before the Home Office makes a decision on your application, you are at risk. Submit with time to spare, not in the final week.

You need a confirmed job offer before you apply. You cannot apply for the visa first and secure the job later. The Certificate of Sponsorship from your employer is part of the application package.

On fees: as of 2026, the application fee is paid by the applicant unless your employer has agreed to cover it. The Immigration Health Surcharge also applies for the duration of your new visa. These are significant costs and need to be factored into your financial planning before you commit to the switch.

If you are trying to work out whether your current visa allows an in-country switch, DM me SWITCH and I will give you a direct answer based on your situation.

Post 3 at 11 am. I am sharing exactly how to verify whether an NHS Trust or private employer can sponsor you, using the official register.
