Nigeria’s move toward state police is important, but it must not be done without full stakeholder engagement and clear operational design. Private security should be integrated into the national security architecture for intelligence gathering and community-level early warning. Any proposal to arm private security must be tightly regulated, legally grounded, and backed by strong oversight, training, and licensing standards.
A balanced security system will combine state policing, federal agencies, and private security under a coordinated, accountable framework.
